Rolled wood slat dune fence at a Jersey Shore Monmouth County Beach

Beach Path and Dune Fencing at the Jersey Shore

Living near the ocean comes with sand that never stays put. Wind pushes it across walkways, onto decks, and into driveways. The right fence slows that wind and keeps sand where it belongs.

Eastcoast Fence installs wood sand fence and beach path fencing along the Jersey Shore. We have built fences for shore homeowners and private beach associations since 1999.

How Sand Fence Works

The gaps between the slats slow the wind as it passes through. Slower wind can’t carry as much sand, so it drops near the fence.

Over a season, that sand builds up along the fence line. That is why beach associations use it to help rebuild dunes after storms. The same idea is behind snow fence, which works on drifting snow the same way.

What We Install

Wood Slat Sand Fence

Our sand fence uses natural wood slats woven together with galvanized wire. It holds up to salt air and wind, and it looks right on a beach. Rolls are set on wood posts driven deep into the sand.

Curious how wood compares to plastic? Our guide to wood vs. plastic snow fence covers the pros and cons of each.

Beach Path Fencing

A fence along each side of a beach path keeps foot traffic on the walkway. It also keeps people and pets off dune grass, which holds the dune together. We can cut and shape the fence to fit curved paths, steps, and narrow openings.

Who We Work With

  • Oceanfront homeowners: Beach paths and sand fence on private dune frontage.
  • Private beach associations: Matching sand fence and path fencing across shared beach access points.
  • Second-home and rental owners: Simple, durable fencing that guides family and guests to the beach.

Why Fall and Winter Are the Right Time

Most beach fencing goes in after the summer crowds leave. Fall and winter winds move the most sand, so fence installed now starts working right away. It also gives the dune a head start before the next storm season.

Booking early helps too. Shore contractors fill up fast once spring arrives. Our post on why fall and winter is the best time to install a fence explains more.

Rules and Approvals

Work on or near a dune is regulated. Depending on the property, you may need approval from your town, the state, or both. Beach associations often have their own rules as well.

We check what applies before any work starts. That way, your fence goes in once and stays in. For general fence rules in our area, see our guide to Ocean County fence regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall is sand fence?

Our standard wood sand fence is four feet tall. It comes in rolls that we cut to fit your fence line.

Will sand fence hurt the dune grass?

No. Posts go in along the planned line, and we work around existing plants. A good fence actually helps the grass by keeping foot traffic off it.

Can you fence a beach path on a curved walkway?

Yes. We cut and set the fence to follow the path, including turns and steps.

Do you work in Brick and Toms River?

Yes. We install fencing in Brick, Toms River, and shore towns up and down the coast.
